Due to remote learning, students looking for Bluestem or Caudill nominees can't just visit the book cart in the library like usual. Instead, use the virtual bookshelves below for each award. Open a shelf and click a title to learn more about a book or to see if it's available. Many of these can be read online as eBooks! (Click here for details on how to use eBooks.)
Every year, students at Clinton and across Illinois participate in the Readers' Choice Awards to read some great books and make their voices heard about their favorites. Check out the Readers' Choice Awards section of this site for more details on the awards and how to participate. Each year, kids all over Illinois vote for a book they think should win a very special award: the Monarch Award. This award is special because it is given by kids, not grown ups. Authors love getting this award because it means their book is loved by the exact group they wrote it for. There are 20 great books nominated every year, and kids who read four or more get to vote for their favorite in early March.
I try to read 8 or more Monarch Award nominees each year with students in Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd grades during their library visits. Even though we are not in the school building, this year is no different! In fact, we likely will get to read more nominees than usual since I will be doing both live class visits and recorded read alouds. As I read and record the titles, I will add them to our virtual Monarch bookshelf. Here, students can watch videos of each real aloud and complete activities related to the book. Activities include crafts, research, related stories, and more. Click the link or the picture below to visit! Every fall we do a library card drive to try to get Chicago Public Library cards into the hands of as many Clinton students as possible. Even though this year looks different in many ways, we still want to help students access the many books and online resources available for free through the public library. Check out this video message from Ms. Mernick for details! Click the image below to go to the flowchart shown in the video. It includes links to all the CPL pages you'll need to get an active library card or eCard. Already know what you need? Here are some links that might help:
Remember, library cards are completely FREE! For a full card, you need to bring an ID and proof of address to a library branch. But ID is not required for an eCard that is good for the rest of the school year. If you don't feel comfortable using your own address on the form, Clinton students can use the school address (6110 N. Fairfield Ave. Chicago, IL 60659) to register. If you have questions or would like help with any part of the process, email Ms. Mernick anytime: [email protected]. Click the flyer below to access the CPL Digital Toolbox page with links:
Remote learning is no reason to stop library story time! This year, Ms. Mernick will be visiting PreK through 2nd grade classes for live read alouds during their synchronous online learning time. During those visits we will focus mostly on reading Monarch Award nominees. But there are so many more wonderful library books to enjoy! Since students can't check them out for themselves, Ms. Mernick will record readings of old favorites and new titles for students to watch whenever they want to hear a story. Just visit the Clinton Library Story Time link to see the most up-to-date version of the bookshelf - new titles are added each week! Once the bookshelf fills up, Ms. Mernick will continue to add new pages so students can access all stories. All read alouds from last spring can also be found at this link. Happy reading!
